12 Scriptures: Micah 6:8 sermon preview

Our formative scripture for this week is Micah 6:8, one that tells us what the Lord requires of us.  But it is interesting to me that this comes in the larger context of the words of a prophet who is helping the people to understand what is happening to them in the changing world around them.  In particular within this chapter, it is telling that the setting is a court-like case in which the people of Israel are on trial for their actions.

The lessons here are straight forward and clear.  What the Lord requires of us is simple, thought always living it out may not be.  We are to act justly, to love mercy, and walk humbly with our God. We act justly by treating each other fairly and properly as well as by advocating for people when they experience injustice.  To love mercy suggests that while we are just, we should not be harsh or unduly cruel.  When in doubt, we should err on the side of mercy, or perhaps we would say on the side of grace.  And to walk humbly with our God suggests a close relationship with God that recognizes our place in the scheme of things and looks to God for guidance.

As you consider the message of Micah 6:8, reflect on these questions in a time of silence, through journaling or in group dialogue.

1. In what ways have you acted justly or unjustly in the last week?

2. How have you recently demonstrated a love for mercy or failed to do so when you now realize you should have?

3. What does it mean for you to walk humbly with God and how do you remain intentional about that in the business of life?

4. How is God calling you to live more deeply into these realities in the week ahead?

5. How might God be calling our congregation to be more deeply formed by these truths?

May Jesus richly bless you in this week ahead, leading you in His kingdom purposes. Amen
