Week 1 (Jan 1-4): Genesis 1:1-14:24 & I Chronicles 1:1-27
As you read through these passages of the Bible, reflect upon these questions individually, through journaling, in pairs, or in small groups...
1. What does the creation account tell us about who we are and who God is?
2. What does it mean for us to be made in the image of God?
3. After six days of work, God rested and in the process modeled Sabbath rest for us. In what ways do you practice Sabbath rest in your own life?
4. The story of Noah and the flood is much more than a children's story. What are we to learn from it as adults?
5. After the flood, God made a covenant for all generations to come. Along with this God established the rainbow as a sign of the covenant to serve as a reminder for God. What does it mean to you for the God of the universe to create a timeless covenant with all people and to signify that with a visible reminder? Have you ever experienced a visible reminder in a time of need? What was it and why was that significant for you?
6. At the tower of Babel, the Lord confused the people's speech and scattered them throughout the earth. This is typically considered to be a curse, but could this have some way also been a blessing? If so, how?
7. God placed a call on Abram that took him from all that he knew in order that all peoples on earth might be blessed through him. When has God placed a call on your life and for whom were the blessings of your call intended?
8. Abram, the father of the people of God, and Sarai went to Egypt under a false pretense. From this, Abram was not only spared, but also became rich. What does this story tell us about the people that God chooses and the ways in which God provides?
9. After dissension arose among their servants, Abram and Lot separated and went to different places. What can we learn about living at peace with one another from this model of conflict resolution?
10. Abram rescued his nephew Lot and a wealth of possessions. He tithed a tenth of this to Melchizedek and allowed the men who went with him to keep their share but returned the rest. What does this teach us about possessions and our faith?
May the Lord bless and shape us through our individual reading and corporate study of His word this year.
