Week 22 (May 25-31): 2 Chronicles 1:14-17, 8:1-9:28, I Kings 4:1-34, 9:15-10:29, Psalms 72, 127, & Proverbs 1:1-16:33
As
you read through these passages of the Bible, reflect upon these
questions individually, through journaling, in pairs, or in small
groups...
1.
(5/27) 2. Proverbs begins by naming its purpose. Is this how you have used or viewed the Proverbs? Give an example of how you have connected with the Proverbs.
3. In several places we read that these are the words of a father to a son. What "proverbs" would you offer to someone younger today?
4. Proverbs seems to suggest that wisdom carries with it quite a bit of power. Does this express your experience? How do we interpret this with our additional knowledge of Jesus Christ and his power?
5. Memorized Proverbs 3:5-6 and incorporate this into your prayer life.
(5/28) 6. In a number of places, there are cautions against the immoral woman. Is this a fair characterization? Does this shift the blame in an unhealthy way from the man to the woman?
7. Proverbs 5:18b-20 speaks of faithfulness to one's wife. Solomon who is credited with writing this had 700 wives and 300 concubines. How does that knowledge influence your understanding of these words?
8. After reading Proverbs 6:6-11, how does this resonate with you? In our culture, is this a needed corrective or an unhealthy standard?
(5/29) 9. How are we to understand wisdom in Proverbs 8? Is it personification (ascribing human characteristics to something not actually human)? Is is an allusion to someone else and if so to whom?
10. Proverbs 10 shifts to pithy statements. Choose on of these statements to meditate on throughout your day.
11. Multiple Proverbs end with "chattering fool comes to ruin." What are some examples of this that you have seen?
(5/30) 12. Read through Proverbs 11. What does this teach us about stewardship?
13. Read Proverbs 12:18. How might you apply this Proverb in the week ahead?
14. Read Proverb 13:24. What are some examples of this that you can think of?
15. Proverbs 14:21 & 31 speak of being kind to the needy. How do we balance this with the risk of enabling?
16. Read Proverb 15:1. How might you apply this Proverb in the week ahead?
17. Proverb 15:31 speaks of gray hair being a crown of splendor. What does this mean to you?
May the Lord bless and shape us through our individual reading and corporate study of His word this year.
