Sabbatical Summary - Week 1

Pastor’s Log – Sabbatical Date 3.1.8
Week one of my third sabbatical is complete and it has been a good week.  I’ve been able to get extra rest, do some reading, and go through some training for our trip to Burkina Faso in June.  Plus I have worked on some projects around the house like cleaning/ organizing my study at home.  Doing this yielded some fun vintage pictures of Beth and her family.  Plus as odd as it may sound, this work was very renewing for m;e all the while being more present to my family and giving Beth some extra help.
Among the projects I completed, the boys were very excited that I was able to get our trampoline back up on Tuesday.  I take it down over the winter in the hopes that it will last longer, and they have been waiting for it to be back up again.  Additionally, with some help from David Segroves, I was also able to replace a gas valve for our grill.  Thanks, David!
Another part of my time with family is being the assistant coach for Maggie’s Jr. High girls’ soccer team.  They were supposed to have their second soccer game of the season on Monday, but it got postponed to Friday and then postponed again.  As such, we had to settle for another week of practice getting ready for an away game on Tuesday, May 7th.

One night this week, Elam went shopping with Beth.  While in the store, the song “What is Love?” by Haddaway came on and Beth said that Elam was rocking out to it.  Elam assures me that he was making fun of it; but knowing this, I decided to pull out my 1993, vintage cassette album containing the song.  I listened to that album many times in high school and have been playing it in the van as my "album of the week."  The kids are mostly less than thrilled by it, but it is a fun trip down memory lane for me.

On Thursday, I gave Beth a respite as I ran Daddy Daycare for her.  She went with Josiah’s class to a Loon’s game in Midland.  She doesn’t get to go on many field trips as a chaperone these days due to her work watching little ones. While she went to the game, I managed the seven little ones that she normally babysits for during the day.

Over the weekend, we hosted some of Beth’s family and also my family.  They came up to see the elementary musical, Peter Pan Jr.  In it, Josiah played Mr. Darling and Captain Hook.  Silas played a lost boy named Hop.  And Elam was part of the back stage crew.  It was fun to see my boys doing something that they love and that they are so good at.  Thanks to all of you who came out to see the show and support them.

On Saturday, Silas had his first U8 soccer game of the season.  I am also coaching his team this spring and their first game last Saturday got cancelled due to the cold temperatures. The game went well over all, though we lost 5-9.  I was proud of the kids for playing hard the whole game and one of the girls scored three of our goals.
On Sunday, Maggie and I went to worship at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church up by Sand Point.  While on sabbatical, I am taking the opportunity to worship with other congregations of various traditions.  The timing was good in that three of Maggie’s classmates (two of which are a couple of her closest friends) were being confirmed and Maggie wanted to go to support them.  I was very glad to be able to make that happen for her in a way that I normally would not be able to.  We ended the week with our first campfire style cookout of the season in our backyard, enjoying the beautiful weather.
