"The Shepherd, the Sheep and the Goats" sermon preview

This week we continue in the book of Ezekiel with chapter 34 in which the prophet tells about the Good Shepherd and the sheep.  As people of the New Testament, these are familiar religious symbols for us but may be found in a context that may be a bit surprising for us.  Even more surprising may be the choice of this passage for baptism Sunday.

But perhaps, Ezekiel's imagery has some important reminders for us as we celebrate baptisms in the river this weekend.  Perhaps this vision of seeking for lost sheep reminds us that the Lord is seeking each one of us.  Perhaps the good shepherd of Ezekiel reminds us that our baptism does not make us perfect bur rather makes a commitment to our own Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ who journeys with us even in the difficult times.  And perhaps, the sheep of this vision serve as a reminder to us that baptism is not just about a statement of belief, it is about the choice to live into a resurrected or transformed life. Perhaps these are important reminders as we celebrate baptism with our newest members this Sunday.
