At the Mennonite Church USA convention in Kansas City, Missouri, last week; we spent time dwelling with Luke chapter 24 and the theme of "On the Way." This chapter picks up after the death and burial of Jesus. And it includes the Emmaus Road story with it's journey motif, but the chapter as a whole reflects the journey of the disciples as they discovered Jesus' resurrection and were called beyond that.
Within this journey we see a number of things worth noting. First, they were opened. They were opened to scripture from what is our Old Testament. Their eyes were opened to seeing Jesus in their midst. And their understanding of how all this connected to their lives were opened as well.
We see a number of things that are opened in this passage but we also see the connection of Jesus and scripture. We see that scripture is important for understanding who Jesus is. It is through scripture that Jesus revealed himself to his companions. We also see that Christ is the key to understanding scripture. It is only through the lens of Jesus that we are able to more fully understand what it is that scripture is saying to us.
